“Yes.”

            He had whispered it before she even finished her explanation. “I’m here. For you, okay?” He pulled the key out of the ignition, coming over to the other side of the car and held his hand out to her. “C’mon. I don’t even care if your grandfather was home. I’m not going to leave you like this, okay? Let’s go.”

        ❝Thank you,❞ she murmured again, taking his hand and climbing out. She looked over at his house next door, wondering what his parents would say if they knew. Quarrels started for the stupidest reasons — like a hedge not being trimmed. Her grandfather was busy, he had no time to trim hedges! All the same, she began to think the fighting was stupid.

        ❝Here, I’ve got the house keys right here,❞ she said, reaching into her purse and pulling them out.
