Cody nodded with a soft smile, “Don’t worry about it, Renn. Its okay.”

    Those were the only words that escaped his mouth toward her. And then he turned back towards the men. And then another punch was thrown at him, and something seemed to snap inside of the boy; the protective side of him coming out. The tall boy looked an Renn and gave a reassuring smile to her, before he headed off toward the tallest of the men.

    Five minutes later, the other men were running off, as Cody turned around with a soft smile. His eyes were puffy; cuts lining on his face and a soft smile over coming him. Although he was dark and hurt— his voice was soft as he held out his hand, 

          “Give me your keys. I’ll drive you home.”

        She didn’t object, handing over her keys. She took note of the cuts on his face, even a forming bruise. Perhaps her previous notions — ❛All men are bad❜ — weren’t true. Then again, she already knew that; Jasper had treated her well before, and of course there was her grandfather.

        She stuck close to his side, not looking back over her shoulder. She wasn’t sure what to say, climbing into the passenger’s side of the vehicle and shooting him the occasional glance.

        
It isn’t supposed to happen like this, she thought. I’m not supposed to be grateful, he isn’t supposed to help…
